Carnival/Kanaval

During Jacmel’s Kanaval in 2018, Haitianola partnered with student photographers from FotoKonbit, an organization that “teaches photography to youth and adults in Haiti. FotoKonbit’s students use photography to explore and represent their lives, ideas and communities”.

For this project, we explored the connections between Jacmel and New Orleans with a specific look into the similar cultural celebration of Carnival, or Kanaval in Haitian Creole. Jacmel, situated on the Southeastern coast of Haiti, is known for its art, music and excitingly vibrant Kanaval.

Haitianola hosted a seminar which discussed the history and shared culture of these two unique places and visually introduced the students to New Orleans Carnival. Next, we attended Kanaval Jacmel together, with New Orleans on our minds and cameras in hand. 

Carnival/Kanaval showcases images taken by the students that either directly echoed those images they had seen depicting New Orleans Mardi Gras during the seminar or images that they felt evoked a similar feeling.
